On Sunday the 19th of February Helston AFC Women pulled off a huge cup upset as they defeated National league side St Austell Ladies 3-1 in the Cornwall FA County Cup.

Helston AFC women currently play in the Cornwall Womens Football League - Division One while St Austell ladies play in the Women's National League, two divisions higher than Helston.

The match took place at St Austell's home ground Poltair Park, it was 0-0 after 25 minutes but not long after Liz O'Reilly put Helston into the lead. Just before half-time, Kim Yould doubled the team's advantage.

In the second half, Helston had to soak up some pressure before they broke away with Liz O'Reilly getting her second and Helston's third with only 20 minutes left on the clock. 10 minutes later St Austell pulled a goal back but it wasn't enough and the cup upset was complete.

Helston now faces Mousehole in the County Cup semi-final on Sunday the 12th of March.

Last night it was the men's side to taste victory in the cup as Helston Athletic knocked out Falmouth Town in the third round of the Les Phillips Cup after a 2-1 win at Kellaway Park.

It only took the blues 12 minutes to go ahead with Jamie Simmonds rifling the ball home, but moments later Falmouth pulled the game back to 1-1 after Helston failed to deal with a corner.

Before half-time, Falmouth's keeper Barnes was shown a red card for rushing out of his area and taking out Rikki Shepherd. In the second half, Helston were also forced to play with ten men after Jewell was shown the red card.

With very little time remaining Tom Payne gave Helston the crucial goal with a rocket of a free kick to give the blues the 2-1 victory. Next up is Buckland Athletic in the fourth round.

Mark Huckle who runs Piran Films was at the match to film highlights and interviews with Helstons director of football Steve Massey on commentary:
