Today, May 20th marks World Bee Day, Helston based gardener Tracy Orchard from Little Miss Orchard tells Nub News why Bees are so important and the need to look after them.
Tracy witnesses Bees close up every day in her job, she told Nub News:
"Bees are special, bees are vital to both pollinate the food we need to survive and pollinate many of the trees and flowers that provide habitats for wildlife.
"I see the value in their work every day and most people will not consider, a world without bees will be a very sad day for nature and us."
"Even Mother Nature has evolved so the seeds and pollen can spread via attracting bees with bright colours of petals and very unique designs.
"It seems to have been the balance of life since life began.
To not look after them, if bees were to become extinct the planet could be in serious trouble because these creatures are such an integral part of most ecosystems." The Woodland Trust shares advice on how you can help bees, the trust says: - Fill your garden with bee-friendly flowers. - Provide shelter for bees - Stop using pesticides - Help a bee in need Click here to see more advice from The Woodland Trust on bees. Tracy added: "Incredible Edible Helston action group is (before the lockdown) in the process of making sure Helston has more wildlife corridors through the town. Allowing wildlife to travel through our urban areas with ease." "Bees are super friendly as they are very busy minding their own business. The other day, I was helping the buff-tailed bees after a badger attack and they were frantically buzzing around me. I was moving debris to rescue those that got covered. The buzzing sound can seem intense but not one stung me or got annoyed I was there. Stinging is the last thought on their minds. "A lot of shops sell cheap wooden insect houses and the rough wood can damage their delicate wings. Always best to check the wood for splinters and rough edges before buying. "Getting rid of native plants like ivy and dandelions are no good for the bees. Sometimes it's better to leave areas in the garden for those plants if possible especially Ivy as it feeds our Ivy Bee very late in the season. Dandelions are a great source of food at the start of the season as well" See more from Little Miss Orchard here.
