There has been movement on lifeguarding as Cornwall Council begin discussions with the RNLI to resume services on Helston beaches and beyond.

The council is working with the RNLI to roll out the services on as many beaches as quickly as possible.

In the council leaders briefing yesterday the discussions were revealed, saying:

"The Council has been in discussions with the RNLI to resume lifeguarding services on some of Cornwall's beaches. Subject to having the appropriate social distancing and public health measures in place.

"Lifeguards will return to a number of beaches with cover to be rolled out in three phases, with the beaches in phase one to be lifeguarded by end of May.

"The RNLI is working with us and other key agencies to develop a Cornwall Beach Safety Plan to provide supportive cover and risk mitigation across non-lifeguarded beaches.

"Details of which beaches are included in the three phases will be issued next week. This is a national issue, no lifeguarding service has been provided at beaches across the country."
