Decision made on plans for Meneage Street housing development

By Joseph Macey 1st Jul 2021

An application to build 9 homes on Meneage Street has been granted conditional approval.

The site lies in the centre of town and results in the development of previously developed land that has been left vacant for some time.

The plans see the construction of 9 high-quality homes with vehicular access from Penview Crescent.

Interestingly, the applicant has a history of delivering quality developments, such as Harveys Corner in Redruth.

The 9 dwellings will be two storeys in height, each with two off-road parking spaces and sizeable private gardens.

Helston Town Council recommended approval of the application back in March.

In a conclusion, Cornwall Council's planning officer added:

"Taking these factors into account, on balance it is considered that the proposal is acceptable, subject to conditions. All other matters raised have been taken into account, including the planning history and the comments of the Town Council, but none is of such significance as to outweigh the considerations that have led to the

conclusion. The application is therefore recommended for approval."

Residents in the nearby area, Penview Crescent, largely supported the plans with one commenting:

"We are very much in favour of the development going ahead. Housing such as this is much needed and we hope that local people will benefit from it. After over 50 years of dereliction, the site will be transformed."

A second resident with an office near the site on Meneage Street, added:

"I have spoken to a good many people who say they would be happy to see something nice being done to the land and to enhance this part of Helston. I also fully support the proposal being made."
