Suspected arson following fire near Predannack Airfield

Cornwall Fire & Rescue Service have revealed that the blaze yesterday evening near Predannack Airfield is being treated as a "suspected arson."

At around 6:30pm, they received the first of five 999 calls reporting a fire in the area of Predannack Airfield.

One major appliance and a light pumping appliance from Mullion Community Fire Station were mobilised.

Devon and Cornwall Police were also called to assist with road closures as the fire spread out onto the road.

"On arrival, crews found a large area of high gorse alight being fanned by high winds," said a fire service spokesperson.

They added:

"Crews requested an additional major appliance which was mobilised from Helston Community Fire Station as well as a further light pumping appliance which was mobilised from St Keverne Community Fire Station, a Wholetime Station Manager was also mobilised."

The fire was extinguished at just after 8pm after firefighters used beaters - arson is suspected.
