The emergency services have sought to remind residents of the dangers of controlled burnings after a spate of calls countywide for incidents including:

  • Domestic bonfires
  • Wildfires and gorse fires
  • Calls to smoke seen from members of the public

Cornwall Fire and Rescue issued a reminder on social media, saying:

"Following a wonderful Easter weekend of dry and sunny weather, we are continuing to urge people to help support them and all Emergency Services in reducing the impacts to all during this difficult time.

"Over the Easter weekend alone there were 11 wildfire/gorse fire incidents across Cornwall, involving 113 personnel and taking up 31 hours of resourcing."

The fire service also reminded people on the dangers of Chinese Lanterns:

"Of particular concern and a key message that we'd like to deliver to all members of the public; is following recent stories and reports of a possible drive to encourage the lighting of Chinese Lanterns to show a further sign of support to our excellent National Health Service (NHS) workers during this unprecedented pandemic.

"Whilst we are and always will be eternally grateful to the fantastic work of NHS workers, we'd like to categorically warn people of the dangers associated with the lighting of Chinese lanterns.

"With the weather looking set to remain dry for the week, the slightly windier conditions and already dry ground; the resulting fires that could ensue following this activity would place the CFRS and its personnel under an increased amount of pressure and risk. Not to mention the risks to life and property as a result.

"We wholeheartedly want to continue to show solidarity and support of all key workers and in particular the NHS staff and would encourage this support by continuing the weekly round of applause and any other safe activity to show your appreciation.

"We thank you for your cooperation during this difficult period and hope that people stay home, stay safe and save lives. All our lives depend on it."
