The Helston Hospital Cross development has been reduced following concerns from the Ministry of Defence.

A planning application was submitted in 2021 to build a retail park with Costa Coffee, Aldi, The Range, and McDonald's between Sainsbury's, Flambards, and RNAS Culdrose.

However, new plans by Pegasus Group, on behalf of Parsonage Developments Ltd, show the removal of The Range.

This was following discussions with the Ministry of Defence who had concerns with the proximity to the High Resolution Direction Finder at RNAS Culdrose. The HDRF is located on a mast near the runway of the airbase.

There is a safeguarding zone surrounding the HDRF which defines height consultation zones that serve to maintain a protected slope around it. This is to ensure it is not obstructed, or its performance degraded by the erection of buildings or structures within the zone.

Assessments identified the development will infringe the protected line of slope necessary to ensure the effective operation of the navigational aid.

MOD objected to the application with the plans needing to be altered or face being rejected altogether.

The revised plans show the removal of The Range and Aldi spaced further away from RNAS Culdrose. The Range has been replaced by a service yard and further car parking. McDonald's and Costa remain in the plans.

The status of the application reads "awaiting decision".
