Plans to build new homes in a village have been refused planning permission with one councillor describing them as "dreadful".

Trelyn Developments had applied for permission to building 14 new homes on land known as The Bowling Green in St Keverne.

The development would have included four affordable homes and had been recommended for approval by Cornwall Council planning officers.

However the council's west sub-area planning committee disagreed and refused planning permission.

St Keverne Parish Council had objected to the plans highlighting that the site sits in the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).

They said that for permission to be granted a development would have to enhance of conserve the AONB – the parish council said it did neither.

The parish council also said that they felt that the amount of affordable housing being provided was "not acceptable".

At the committee meeting the architect of the scheme, speaking on behalf of the applicants, said they wanted to "provide affordable homes for local people".

They said that there had not been any objections from the AONB officers and that the level of affordable housing being provided had been agreed with the council's affordable housing officer.

Committee member Graham Coad proposed that the application should be approved saying that he could see no planning reason to refuse permission.

But David Biggs disagreed, he said: "This is, for me, a dreadful application, I don't like it at all. It will have a serious impact on the AONB. I think it is almost without merit. I propose refusal."

Sue Nicholas agreed, adding: "There is a big issue with the AONB. It is supposed to be treated as though it is a national park, it should enhance the area."

Cllr Coad's proposal to approve the plans was lost with two votes in favour and 12 against.

The proposal from Cllr Biggs to refuse permission was then put to the vote and was agreed with 12 councillors in favour, one against and one abstention.
