Pre application supported to install coastal defences at Coverack Beach

Pre-application advice has been offered support in a concluding statement to the coastal protection works at Coverack Beach.

The work would see construction to install a 90-metre section of coastal defences along an undefended section of Coverack Beach.

The development is believed to be necessary in order to protect Coverack from further coastal erosion and flooding following storms in 2017 which damaged an existing seawall.

The application was supported by Peter Gregory, Principal Development Officer for Cornwall Council, now it will turn to the local planning authority to make a decision on the works.

A supporting statement for Cormac reads:

"Without the proposed development further erosion of the cliffs is likely to pose a risk to the public highway (the B3294) and local residents living adjacent to the cliffs.

"The proposed development will also increase the village's

resilience to future climate change impacts, with predicted future sea-level rise and increased precipitation likely to increase coastal erosion rates and flooding.

"The proposed development is anticipated to follow a two-stage process, with the South frontage of the sea defences - a composite typology section – being constructed first in order to protect the road, followed by the North frontage of the sea defences – the rock slope."
