Tomorrow was due to be the biggest and most anticipated day on the Helston calendar, Flora Day.

However, due to the Coronavirus epidemic organisers of Helston Flora Day announced in March that it would not go ahead this year.

The day before the celebration was set to take place, Mayor John Martin has addressed Helston with this message:

"It's such a shame that we are not able to celebrate our Flora Day on Friday 8th May. It's such a wonderful historical event. We all understand the reasons why we can't take to the streets this year, but hopefully, you can celebrate at home. Helston Town Band is online this Friday so we can keep the spirit alive within our front rooms or gardens.

"We can also recognise the 75th Anniversary of Victory in Europe day at the same time. As long as everyone stays safe at home, we can still enjoy the day and dream of Flora Days to come."

Earlier this week the Flora Day Association also sought to remind residents to stay inside this Flora Day saying that "the rules must be observed", on social media the association said:

"In the next week Helston would be due to celebrate one of the most important days in our calendar, unfortunately, this cannot be the case this year.

"We understand completely the difficulties this disruption has caused, but the action the government has taken is absolutely necessary, for one very simple reason.

"If too many people become seriously unwell at one time, the NHS will be unable to cope. This will cost lives. We must slow the spread of the disease, and reduce the number of people needing hospital treatment in order to save as many lives as possible.

"That is why we are reiterating the governments one simple instruction – you must stay at home this Flora Day."
