Helston duo complete Everest climb from home

By Joseph Macey 8th Jun 2020

Terry Lander, 36, and his 14-year-old daughter Sophie have completed the climb of Mount Everest in their own home via the stairs - way ahead of schedule.

Over 12 weeks, they vowed to climb to the top of the world, 8,848 metres or just over 29,000 feet.

The challenge worked out at around 40 flights of stairs a day.

Terry is one of around 300 Ministry of Defence civil servants at Culdrose, where he works as a senior electrical supervisor.

Terry told Nub News:

"We managed to do the challenge in five weeks instead of the twelve, mainly down to Sophie, my 14-year old pushing in the last week.

"She did over 170 flights in one day at one point! It never really got any easier but we were able to get the numbers up with consistent pushes, doing eleven flights at a time over the course of the day.

"Waiting for us at the top was Toblerone and mountain water just to give us a little boost.

"We've raised £106 on the JustGiving site and £20 via donations but we're hoping that will go up now that we've finished. It was definitely hard going but well worth it to get to the top and doing that final stair!"
