Charity shop supporting both active and retired fishermen opens in Helston

By Joseph Macey 27th Nov 2019

A new shop supporting fishermen and their families has opened in Helston.

The Fishermen's Mission charity shop based on Coinage Ope is the only one in the UK, something which shop manager Melinda King says they are very proud of.

Melinda King told Nub News:

"This is the 2nd year we have had a pop-up shop. On boxing day 2017 we started an Unwanted Gift Amnesty. We had a box in the shop ready for donations.

"Last year was our first year in the old Oxfam shop. I just thought after the factory shop went there was nowhere in the town to buy any decorations, jumpers etc. I contacted the landlord and made one.

"This Friday (29th), we are having children only in the shop. They will be helped by volunteers to choose their gifts for family members, and my volunteers will then wrap their gift and help write the tag. A truly rewarding evening."

Last week they won the Volunteer Cornwall 'Host Of The Year' award.

Melinda added:

"The mission supports both active and retired fishermen and their families in times of hardship and offers support constantly. In fact, 88p from every £1 spent goes to supporting our local fishermen. The shop is open 11-4 Monday to Saturday (but is volunteer dependent)."
