In September 2019, as part of the climate action plan, Helston Climate Action Group invited the people of Helston and surrounding parishes to plant trees, and contribute to a "Forest for Helston."

The people of Helston rose to the challenge – from students at Helston Community College to residents in their own back gardens, to the National Trust who planted trees in hedges.

HCAG has announced that the total count of trees that have been planted for the Forest for Helston now stands at 2,626.

Some of the locations of the trees planted include Cades Parc, Helston Community College, Coronation Park and Porthleven Primary School. You can view a full map of the trees here.

Speaking on the trees Maggie Freegard told Nub News:

"We are delighted and amazed that it has risen to such a high number so quickly and it has surpassed our expectations so quickly.

"We realise that there is so much more to do, doing the project we realise how much space there is for trees in Helston.

"We are very keen to keep going preferably at the same sort of pace."

Not all of these trees are freestanding. Many have been planted in hedgerows.

Hedges are extremely important as habitat for wildlife, and form wildlife corridors.

"There used to be far more hedges in and around Helston than we have now, and we need to put some back," HCAG said.

As tree numbers grow across Helston and its surrounding parishes, HCAG intends to continue to follow the Woodland Trust's advice and 'plant the right tree in the right place.'
