Helston residents are being warned to stay alert following reports of a series of cold calling incidents.

Devon and Cornwall issued a warning to residents this morning to look out for rogue traders in Cornwall saying:

"Please be wary of rogue traders cold calling, please do not agree to work offered by unsolicited doorstep callers, the risks are high.

"If you want work doing in your home or garden, take time to get three quotes from reputable businesses you trust and make your decision on who to use in your own time."

The issue was raised on social media by a local gardener who said:

"There are at least two groups of people in vans trawling Helston, cold calling predominantly elderly people offering hedge cutting and gutter cleaning. They are quoting outrageous prices and doing seriously substandard work.

"Already this week I have had two of my gardening customers fall foul of them. Both elderly ladies. One has just paid £250 for her bungalow facias and gutter to be washed, it's a £100 job at most and they even used her equipment."

Other residents quickly joined the discussion saying they had experienced similar incidents, one comment read:

"They called on Monday at Trenethick Avenue but I didn't answer the door, it didn't feel right."

A second read:

"One called at Barton Close asking if I wanted any trees cut down."

A third read:

"We had them on Pendeen Parc this afternoon. Sent on their way."

Devon and Cornwall Police also provided advice on what to do if you see rogue traders in your area:

- If you are concerned someone is at risk, always call the police.

- If you are concerned rogue traders are operating in your area, always report it.

- If someone knocks on your door and you are not sure, don't open the door.

If you see cold callers in the area, have concerns for neighbours, or have any information you can phone 101 or email [email protected].

Devon and Cornwall Police have been contacted for further comment.
