"Come back later": Council plea to Helston residents following dangerous long queues at recycling centre

Cornwall Council has been asking people who are thinking of visiting the Household Waste and Recycling Centres to consider come back another time due to expected long queues for the rest of this week.

This comes following the closure of Helston's HWRC yesterday from long queues which some residents say were causing a safety issue.

One resident said: "There is a huge safety issue with people queuing for the recycling centre in Helston, forcing people to overtake the queuing traffic on a dangerous bend if they want to turn left towards Tresprison Industrial Park, or continue towards Gweek.

"Is it possible to resume the queuing system at Flambards which prevented this problem? It would be awful to see an accident occurring."

Cornwall Council wrote on social media:

"There are long queues at Cornwall's Household Waste and Recycling Centres at the moment. Please come back next week."

The Council have released HWRC guidelines for those that are visiting:

• DO NOT visit if you are in self isolation, shielding, have Covid-19 symptoms or are in a household during a 14-day isolation.

• HWRCs are now accepting all the different kinds of materials they normally take. To check what your HWRC accepts please see the SUEZ website here. HWRCs do not accept trade waste.

• We are accepting chargeable waste such as hardcore, soil, tyres, plasterboard or asbestos. Card payments only.

• Please hang onto anything that is reusable until charities are able to take them. There will be people in need of your reusable items.

• There might be queues to use the HWRCs. Some of the sites have traffic management measures in place such as changes to the route you access the sites.

• Trailers are allowed onto the sites, but please check that your trailer complies with the vehicle permit scheme.

  • Remember to stay in your vehicle while queuing to comply with social distancing and for your own safety.

• Please follow ALL instructions given to you when you arrive at your HWRC and observe 2 metre distancing at all times. Respect your HWRC staff. They are key workers doing a difficult job at a difficult time. We will not tolerate any abuse of our staff.

You can read all of the guidelines here.
