Plans for extensions and alterations at Helston Rugby Club have been given the go-ahead by Cornwall Council's planning committee.

The approved application sees plans to enhance existing facilities at Helston RFC through the construction of a clubhouse extension to create a first-floor function room and balcony area overlooking the pitch.

A spokesperson for Helston Rugby Club said:

"Our aim, though this development going forward, is to create a much-needed space allowing us to generate sustainable revenues to bring continued success on and off the field for Helston and our community."

Back in February, Helston Rugby Club lodged an application to improve its facilities utilising the large room in the currently

inaccessible roof space.

A new rear extension provides internal access to the first-floor function room for all, while the balcony offers views of the pitch and egress via the escape stair in case of an emergency.

The extension is to the rear of the property, with only the ridge visible from Clodgey Lane. The fire escape stair is shielded from view by both the clubhouse and mature planting along the site

boundary.

The additional space enables Helston Rugby Club to continue to provide training sessions and other activities too, and for the benefit of the local community.

A concluding statement from the planning officer read:

"On balance it is considered that the proposal is acceptable, subject to conditions.

"All other matters raised have been taken into account, including the planning history and the comments of the Parish Council, but none is of such significance as to outweigh the considerations that have led to the conclusion."

One of the conditions in the final report stated, "the development cannot be undertaken until the installation of a system for the disposal of surface water on the site has been completed."

A member of the club for "many years" commented on the application, saying:

"The club and its volunteers has provided a venue for not only the rugby teams present but also for the community, hosting many functions and events through the year.

"This extension allows the club to provide not only more to the community but also providing much needed extra space for parents/supporters and teams on the weekend thus bringing extra needed money into the club and local area."
