A Helston resident has called for a McDonald's to be built in the town centre to drive more people to the town and boost the economy.

Tom Hughes, a resident of Helston, has called for support in getting the fast-food giant to open a branch on Coinagehall Street.

Tom told Nub News: "My main reasons for wanting a McDonald's are due to the fact that the town centre doesn't see the footfall it used to. I really believe a chain fast food brand would help bring people to the town.

"Also I really like Big Macs and McDonald's coffee."

Tom says that Helston needs a new lease of life, and he feels that a McDonald's or an ice skating rink will help to improve things.

"Right now I feel Helston's town centre is dying, it really needs some new life in it and I can't imagine anything other than a McDonald's or an ice skating rink improving things," he said.

Tom has posted his thoughts in a petition and on Facebook, to which the community has been responding.

"The feedback I've had on Facebook has been really positive. A couple of people were a bit apprehensive about the idea but I like to think I explained my thoughts and changed their minds.

"We have over one hundred signatures on the petition for mackies so hopefully our dreams can come true and Helston can be put on the map."

One resident responded to Tom's petition, saying: "I am veggie but I reckon it's a great idea to attract people. With litter issues usually they have people clearing up litter near the restaurant."

Another resident stated: "Finally a petition worth signing!"

Some people are against the idea, however, feeling that Helston has other eateries to be proud of.

"We don't need fast food in Helston, there are enough cafes in Helston," said one resident.

"McDonald's is the epitome of what is wrong with this world," said another.
