There have been rave reviews for The Top House Inn since the new owners took over – and it's easy to see why.

The refurbished pub in the Lizard Village is stunning – whilst maintaining its original features, photographs and historic furnishings.

Andy and Margaret Sutherland took the reins of one of the UK's most southerly pubs early last year. The pair moved from Norfolk seeking a change of career.

Andy told Nub News: "We saw it at the worst it's been in many years. It had been closed for nine months, there was mildew everywhere. There had been no investment in the place for 10 years. We looked at it and instantly fell in love with it. It had so much potential."

There wasn't a long business plan for Andy and Margaret – all they wanted was for the pub to be at the centre of the village community.

Andy said: "Our aim was to make people welcome. When they walk through the door of a pub, they deserve a big smile and a welcome. You must get the product right – I think we have the best selection of drinks in the whole of the Lizard Peninsula. You've got to get your food right. It is pub food cooked properly. We don't pretend to be anything we aren't. We are a pub with letting rooms, that serves good pub food. We do BBQ and roasts on Sunday. The whole package is geared around what a pub should be and done properly."

"You've got to give people a reason to visit you," Andy added.

Alongside their music, food, and wide selection of drinks, The Top House Inn also has a busy music scene. During the Jubilee weekend, the pub had music on for five days, they have a regular spot from the Lizard Players that is open to all musicians and singers to play together, open mic night, live music from local girl Stacey Lee, to well know artists like Will Keating and Jolly Roger, among many others. Almost every day there is something going on.

It has become the hub of the village – as Andy and Margaret set out to do.

Andy continued: "We have said to the village that this is their pub. We are custodians of it. Use it as you see fit. I grew up in a village in Warwickshire and it had a village pub. A village pub is a magical place, and this is clearly the village pub. The Top House has a lot of history, character, it's pretty much unspoilt. It has a warm, welcoming feeling about it."

Since the pair took over, they have gone from being listed 17th on TripAdvisor in the Lizard to being 2nd on the whole Lizard Peninsula. A reflection of the team's hard work.

Overall, the rooms are spotless, light, and stylish. You'll get a good night's sleep as the rooms are tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the bar.

The food is served to an exceptionally high standard. You can taste the freshness behind The Top House burger that is accompanied by delicious homemade rustic chips. They use as many local products throughout their venue from the toiletries in the rooms to the tea and coffee and local vegetables, and fresh seafood from local fishermen.

All the staff are welcoming and attentive which is a key component of any successful pub visit.

In the morning you can enjoy a hearty breakfast served with Cornish tea or coffee. A perfect way to round off your stay.

A hearty breakfast to round off your stay,

Overall, Andy and Margaret have done an incredible job in reviving the pub. Situated in the heart of the village and it is also the southernmost inn in Britain. The Top House has great food, stunning rooms, and an array of live music. Something for everyone.
