Wendron School judged as 'inadequate' by Ofsted

By Joseph Macey 9th Dec 2021

A recent damning report from Ofsted has judged Wendron Church of

England Primary School as 'inadequate' and does not support pupils to fulfil their potential. This has been met with a response from the Southerly Point Co-operative Multi-Academy Trust, saying that the department has failed to take into account the difficulties of the past 20 months. The trust says they are "disappointed" with the recent inspection, which was carried out on the 19th and 20th of October. Wendron School's quality of education was rated "inadequate" as was its personal development, leadership and management, and

early years provision. Behaviour and attitude were judged as "requiring improvement".

The report also says expectations are too low, low quality work is accepted, and pupils are not learning a meaningful and challenging curriculum.

Responding to the report, a trust spokesperson said:

"The report is clear that the pupils at the school are happy, safe and attend well, we are disappointed with the outcome from Ofsted.

"While we do not intend to challenge the report, we do believe that Ofsted has failed to reflect the many challenges and the very great disruption that Covid has caused over the past 20 months. Without these challenges and the amount of time staff have needed to spend on ensuring children are safe and healthy, then the school would have progressed much more quickly.

"We have already drawn up a rapid action plan, which we are enacting, covering a new curriculum, a new phonics programme and a class and year restructure. This work is being supported by a new interim governing body which has been recently appointed.

"We are confident that these actions will mean that the school is delivering a high-quality education to pupils very soon, and we are working hard every day to achieve that."

Ofsted gave the school a number of things to improve including:

  • Leaders must ensure that suitable curriculum plans are in place so that pupils know and remember more.
  • They (trustees and governors) need to challenge leaders about the underperformance of the school and provide support that is effective.
  • Leaders need to take more precise action based on reliable assessments so that the school's quality of education improves.
  • Ensure that suitable curriculum plans are in place so that pupils know and remember more.
  • There needs to be a system in place to help pupils with gaps in their knowledge to catch up and keep up.
  • Leaders need to ensure that there is a suitably ambitious early years curriculum that enables children to learn to be independent.
