A sailor from RNAS Culdrose – currently out on operations in the Caribbean – has been praised for his dedication.

Leading Engineering Technician Liam Darby is part of the 1700 Naval Air Squadron personnel on RFA Argus.

He has served a particularly lengthy deployment as the ship was sent away to support British Overseas Territories at short notice, and there are very strict restrictions on shore leave which have made it tricky at times.

Lieutenant Commander Danny Gordon, the commanding officer of 1700 Naval Air Squadron, nominated LET Darby for an endeavour award.

The squadron's role is to support flying operations off the ship which is conducting maritime security operations, counter-narcotics operations and is ready to provide humanitarian aid and disaster relief to the Caribbean nations if a hurricane passes through the region.

Lieutenant Commander Neil Harris, the senior naval officer on Argus, said:

"Endeavour awards are nominated by the commanding officer to individuals demonstrating the highest levels of performance and commitment to the Royal Navy, often in excess of what is expected of them.

"Throughout his time with 1700, LET Darby has consistently delivered to the highest standards. In particular, he stepped up to cover a shortfall in the workforce during a very challenging period of operational tasking ensuring there was no reduction in the operating capability of the ship. He is fully deserving of this recognition."
