A landlady in Helston has joined the latest craze and ditched alcohol for a month in aid of charity.

Emma Ealey, landlady at The Rodney Inn at Meneage Street, joined an estimated four million people in the UK who pledged to detox after Christmas and quit drinking for Dry January. Running a busy bar throughout the month was a tough choice for the publican, yet she was able to celebrate after raising more than £1,000 for Guide Dogs for the Blind.

She said: "I had great support from our customers who have helped me raise more than £1000 for this important cause. There was obviously a lot of temptation but not a single drop passed my lips!"

Emma has extended her fundraising by organising a fun 'Wine and Wisdom' evening and charity auction on February 13. Along with husband Terry, the duo will offer wine, cheese and biscuits free of charge to guests and are seeking teams of four people or more to enter. The cost is £2 per person, with all proceeds going to the charity.

Emma added: "We already have some great lots available, including a two-minute trolley dash around a leading supermarket. We are looking for more donations from local businesses who can offer us something we can auction to raise as much money as possible."
