Porthleven Town Band bid for new rehearsal space

By Joseph Macey 11th Feb 2021

Porthleven Town Band's bid for a new rehearsal space has been given the go-ahead.

The development sees the change of use of the premises, at The Old Sunday School, Chapel Terrace, into a band rehearsal premises for use by the Porthleven Town Band.

The proposal has been supported as it will result in the provision of a community cultural facility in a sustainable central location within the town.

"This will not only be to the benefit of the Town Band itself, but to the wider social and cultural well-being of the local community," the application reads.

The building has retained its original massing and finish despite being converted into residential use in 2002, the development will see minimal physical change to the building and returning it back into a community space is seen as a positive move.

In conclusion, the officer's report read:

"Taking these factors into account, on balance it is considered that the proposal is acceptable, subject to conditions.

"All other matters raised have been taken into account, including the planning history and the comments of the Parish Council, but none is of such significance as to outweigh the considerations that have led to the conclusion."

The plans were well received, with one comment reading:

"I wish to offer my full support to this admirable community project.

"As already stated in submitted documentation this is indeed a very rare chance to provide a welcome facility for the wider community.

"It is commendable that the seller has apparently made every effort to assist the return to community use and has refused other offers in favour of the applicants."

A second read:

"Fully support the town bands application."
