Porthleven Harbour development plans given the go ahead

Plans for the development of Porthleven Harbour have been given approval after owners amended the proposals to address concerns.

Cornwall Council's west sub-area planning committee agreed to give planning permission for the masterplan development submitted by Porthleven Harbour and Dock Company.

The development at The Shipyard, Harbour Head, includes the demolition of industrial buildings, the conversion of an industrial building into performance space, a new medical centre and four apartments.

It was the second time that the plans had gone to the committee after they were deferred at the November meeting to seek clarification on some matters.

As a result the plans were amended to remove proposals for an area to the north of the site and plans to remove a long section of stone wall.

The applicants had also removed plans for a lobster hatchery and restaurant building which was previously intended to be built on the site.

Andrew Wallis, Cornwall councillor for Porthleven, had previously objected to the application due to the impact the development would have on the area and concerns raised by the town council.

But he welcomed the amended plans and said that he now supported the proposals.

He said he welcomed the "efforts to retain the historic wall" saying that while it was not listed it was important to the town.

Cllr Wallis added: "As a whole any development is always going to be tricky one in an historic place like Porthleven.

"Looking at it I have no grounds to object as the areas I raised have been dealt with effectively."

Committee member Mike Thomas said that he was very happy with the application and said he would propose approval as recommended by planning officers.

That was seconded by Mark Kaczmarek who said: "The applicant has moved quite a long way to satisfy the local member's concerns. There are 16 conditions on this that are quite rigorous."

The application was approved unanimously by the committee.
