A trip from Amsterdam to Porthleven in 1973 has been recalled by a holidaymaker who details his love for Cornwall.

Hans Peters got married to his wife Rita in 1972, and they were looking for a place to go on holiday in 1973. A tip from a colleague brought them to the South of England, suggesting they should visit The New Forest, Dartmoor, and Cornwall.

There were some doubts as Hans was worrying about the weather but they were assured they would enjoy it. From Holland, they travelled to Oostend and took the ferry over to Dover.

Hans told Nub News his first experience of arriving in the UK, saying it was a "beautiful country" and they liked it straight away.

The pair stopped in Rye, heading to Cuckfield, The New Forest, before going from Dartmoor to Cornwall.

They decided to stay for a week between The Lizard and Penzance – visiting Porthleven in between.

Hans told Nub News of his time in Porthleven:

"We found a B&B in Glendale, Wellington Road with Mrs Orchard. We visited the whole area and found it amazing, all those little harbours with the tide difference which we didn't have in Holland. We loved Porthleven, Mullion, and Kynance Cove.

"There was a small restaurant in Helston and small supermarkets in Helston and Porthleven. There was also a fish & chip shop in Porthleven. We made walks from Porthleven to Prussia Cove, Betty's Cove via Praa Sands, and enjoyed walks from Porthleven to Gunwalloe via Loe.

"We explored Mullion Cove and Kynance Cove and toured the whole of the area. We walked from The Lizard to Church Cove and to Cadgwith. We stayed a few days near London before travelling back to Holland knowing this wasn't the last time that we would visit England. We took Porthleven in our hearts.

"When we came back later it had changed slightly and there were more places to eat and we visited very nice pubs. We returned in 1976 and stayed in Lostwithiel. In 1982 we stayed in Seaton, 1985 in Perranporth, and 1987 in Marazion and Bude. In all those years we have never had bad weather, always lots of sunshine and good weather for long walks."
