Helston Town Council has announced that they are looking for members of the public to take on the role of Flood Wardens.

Flood wardens are volunteers that help and prepare those in the local community that are at risk from flooding. A flood warden should be able to give advice and information to those at risk during dryer periods, as well as support during a flood event.

Flood wardens help pass information from the Environment Agency and emergency services to the local community and vice-versa. Acting as the eyes and ears on the ground, whilst not putting themselves at risk, flood wardens are a vital link between the local community, the local authorities, and the Environment Agency.

A Flood Warden's Role:

• To help prepare the local community

• To keep neighbours informed

• To work with neighbourhood teams

• To monitor the situation locally and report back to the Environment Agency.

A Flood Warden should NOT:

• Have property vulnerable to flooding themselves, if possible

• Operate or repair flood defence structures or equipment unless trained to do so

• Enter floodwater at anytime

• Use any equipment that you have not been trained or authorised to use

• Attempt to deal with any potentially difficult situations such argumentative or aggressive people.

If you are interested in becoming a Flood Warden please contact Helston Town Council at [email protected] or telephone 01326 572063 with your name, address, telephone number, email address, and consent for your details to be passed to relevant third parties in order to provide the required training. The training will be provided through the Environment Agency.

TRAINING DATES ARE:

30th January at 7 pm at the Guildhall - Taster Session

21st February at 7 pm at the Guildhall - Session 1

28th February at 7 pm at the Guildhall - Session 2

Participants will need to ensure they're available for both sessions.
