Helston: Our historic town

We wanted to write an article that celebrated our great town. To put into perspective how lucky we are to live where we do.

Helston, Hellys in Cornish, is a former cattle market town and stannary. It is situated on the northern end of the Lizard peninsular and is the most southerly town in the UK.

We asked you to describe Helston in just three words.

Facebook commenter, Debbie Wright, said "historic".

The town is probably best known for Flora Day, which takes place on the 8th May. It is a celebration of the passing of winter and the arrival of spring. The music and dance which accompanies the day is said to have been written in 1911.

This is one of the oldest British traditions still practised and the residents are extremely proud of it.

On top of the aforementioned Flora Day, the Helston Town Band has a wealthy history, dating all the way back to the 20th century. They have members today that have connections extending back as far as four generations.

Many commenters spoke of Helston as a "friendly" place. The shops, cafes and pubs that sprinkle the highstreet are always sociable places. Someone new to the town wouldn't find it hard to make friends while visiting.

Pamela Lavelle from Helston Town Council, said:

"The historic town of Helston has something for everyone to enjoy. The sense of heritage in the town is strong with many historic buildings including the Guildhall, Grylls Monument and the Blue Anchor Inn. These and many more can be seen by following the town's Heritage Trail. The Museum of Cornish Life is an amazing place to visit, containing a wealth of exhibits which reflect the social and industrial history of the area. A great place for the family.

"Then there are the many ancient traditions which have been preserved, the most notable being Flora Day but we must also mention the Freedom Parade, Remembrance Day Parade and Beating the Bounds as well as the Town Council's own Mayor Choosing and Town Meetings. More recently some excellent events such as Christmas Lights, Helston Makes It, the International Guitar Festival and Theatre in Coronation Park have added to Helston's appeal.

"We must also mention the Community - so many clubs, societies and groups - much too numerous to mention - they make Helston a strong community town. For example, Helston Football Club can turn out the most teams in leagues around the south-west of any town in Cornwall; Helston bowling club is reputed to be one of the oldest bowling clubs in the country. The most southerly town in the country has much to be proud of."

"Community" was also frequently used by our readers to describe Helston.

Constant events ran by venues like CAST, Crafty Cafe and Museum of Cornish Life are constantly bringing the community together through art and other events.

Madeleine Thurley from Crafty Cafe Helston told us:

"I think Helston has had a pretty hard time in the high street for the last 15 years or so, but with some really great businesses making a great go of it, like Cast and The Coffee Hut and new ones popping up like the pottery studio, bridal boutique, and our business The Crafty Cafe, it really feels like Helston is having a bit of a revival in its high street once more, which will be so good for the town.

"We just need the parking to support that now!"

Seasonal celebrations like the Helston Christmas light switch on is also a key moment of bringing the town together.

The Helston Farmers Market is the largest farmers' market in Cornwall, with over 35 stalls selling a range of fresh, local produce. This is a well-loved addition to the Helston community, with many residents constantly praising the welcoming and helpful staff.

Pub staples of Helston, The Blue Anchor and Beehive, are the local for many residents of the area.

Dance crowds will often gravitate towards Inferno, however, a club that is loved by the younger people in the area.

We love our great historic town.
