The victorious HMS Seahawk Field Gun Crew brought their trophy home to RNAS Culdrose.
They triumphed at the fiercely competitive Royal Navy and Royal Marine Charity Field Gun Tournament at HMS Collingwood earlier this month.
In a nail-bitingly close finish, the Culdrose crew crossed the line just a quarter of a second ahead of HMS Heron (sister air station RNAS Yeovilton), (Seahawk run time 1 minute 18.81 seconds to Heron's 1 minute 19.06 seconds).
It was a special moment for Lieutenant 'Jimmy' Turner to finally take the top field gun trophy – the victory only came on his 104th competitive run over 13 seasons.
"It was quite emotional actually," he said. "We're a new crew with 14 new runners this year. As a crew, you've got to be as one and everyone has to be in the same place with complete equality. This year we really had it, and everything clicked.
"The key to this event is not just strength, but I would say reliability, punctuality and integrity. That is turning up to training on time, in clean kit, being able to own up if you make a mistake and knowing everyone can depend on each other."
The crew were congratulated by Culdrose commanding officer Captain Stuart Finn pictured centre), who said their achievement exemplified the finest traditions of the Fleet Air Arm and the Royal Navy.
