Helston: Storm Arwen set to hit Cornwall bringing strong winds and cold weather

By Joseph Macey 26th Nov 2021

The Met Office has issued a severe weather warning for Cornwall as Storm Arwen is set to sweep the region.

Storm Arwen has been named by the Met Office, and is forecast to bring in a period of very strong winds and cold weather.

A yellow weather warning was issued yesterday for Helston on Saturday evening but that has now been upgraded to a double yellow warning.

The alert is in place all day Friday (26th), through until Saturday (27th) at 6pm.

Gusts seem likely to reach 50 to 60 mph widely, with 70 to 80 mph possible in coastal locations.

What to expect:

  • Injuries and danger to life from flying debris are possible Some damage to trees, temporary structures, and buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs, could happen.
  • Road, rail, air, and ferry services may be affected, with longer journey times and cancellations possible.
  • Some roads and bridges may close.
  • Power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage.
  • Injuries and danger to life could occur from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads, and properties.

Met Office Principal Meteorologist Dan Suri added:

"Storm Arwen is associated with a deep low-pressure system that will impact the northeast in particular from Friday, but will also bring wider impacts to the UK with high winds, rain, and some snow probable over the high ground.

"Storm Arwen's impacts are mainly associated with high winds as the storm sinks southwards and will widely bring gusts of up to 65mph in coastal areas, although slightly stronger in the northeast, with in excess of 75mph possible in exposed locations."
