Helston residents have been debating on social media whether they will follow the mandatory guideline which is coming into effect on Friday, which says it is mandatory to wear a facemask in shops and confined spaces.

In a poll created by resident Chris Jolly, residents were asked if they were going to abide by the new policy of mandatory face masks in shops or not.

While the majority of the poll said they would be abiding by the new policy, much debate was carried out with those who said they wouldn't be.

Face masks in shops and confined spaces will be mandatory from Friday 24th July.

"I'll wear one because I have to but not a fan of it nor do I really agree with it. I've already got the next few weeks online shopping orders in to avoid going to the shop," said one resident.

Another resident stated: "Little too late and the masks ain't going to help anyone."

Fixed penalty £100 fines can be issued to people who do not follow the rules, however, Devon and Cornwall Police Commissioner Alison Hernandez, recently said that the police would not be attending calls that were solely based on someone not wearing a mask.

"It's not optional. It's like asking if you'll be wearing a seatbelt," one resident said.

Another resident said: "We've been wearing one since the lockdown opened up. It often seems we are the only ones."
