The Mayor's Fund will once again support a community group this Christmas.

A donation of £500 to Helston & the Lizard foodbank will help provide additional food to those most vulnerable individuals and families in the Helston area.

The foodbank operates from the Helston-based charity The Mustard Seed, in partnership with The Trussell Trust.

This year, they will be delivering over 120 Christmas hampers to local families and individuals in need (approximately 430 people), for whom the possibility of a Christmas meal would otherwise be very unlikely to happen.

These hampers will be organised, sorted, and delivered on Christmas Eve by a team of over 70 volunteers.

Speaking to Nub News, Helston Mayor Tim Grattan-Kane, said:

"This year has been another challenging one. Some members of our community face great difficulty in supporting themselves and their families with sufficient food to feed themselves. Unemployment, illness, bereavement, and family breakdowns are just a few of the reasons why people can face this challenge. In addition, the removal of the Universal credit uplift, soaring energy prices, and inflation add to this challenge.

"The Helston Lizard Foodbank does a wonderful job in supporting those in need within our community. I am pleased to be able to support their activities at this time of year. I have provided £500 from the Mayors Welfare Fund towards the good work of the foodbank.

"I would encourage others who are in a position to help to do likewise. People can donate directly to the Helston Lizard Foodbank or via the Mayors Welfare Fund at The Guildhall. May I take the opportunity to wish everyone a Merry Christmas with best wishes for a happy 2022."
