Helston AFC has received a letter of thanks from Helston and Lizard food bank for their donation back at the end of March.

The donation was created from the money that was going to be spent on end of season celebrations, top-ups from other members of the team and a fund which players added to throughout the season, adding in money for fines like turning up late, wearing the wrong shirt and so on.

The six thousand pound donation was split between The Mustard Seed Foodbank and Helston Cottage Hospital.

Steve Massey, first-team manager, told Nub News:

"We wanted to give the money to a worthy cause and we particularly wanted to do it locally.

"We're such a big part of the community and it's what the team is all about, we want to give back as much as we can because the community does so much for."

In a letter from the foodbank, they wrote:

"This will be of immense help and we very much appreciate your support of the work of the Foodbank here at Mustard Seed, particularly with the ongoing coronavirus situation.

"We understand that it was a joint team decision to donate the team 'fines' fund, together with a top-up from the management, monies which would have otherwise been put towards the end of season celebrations.

"This is such an amazing gift, especially given the teams disappointment following the FA's announcement particularly after what had been such a great season for the team up to that point."

This comes following the recent events of Manchester United player, Marcus Rashford, putting his case forward for free school meals and causing the government to do a dramatic U-turn.

"I thought now was a nice time to refresh people's memories on what the club did," Steve Massey told us.
