The Helston Town Band have released a video with the band's Musical Director Kevin Johns as he shares his favourite Flora Day memories.

Alongside the video the band wrote on social media:

"This week would normally be a busy week for the band filled with last-minute preparations and of course the annual dancer's rehearsals in the Epworth Hall.

"Kevin Johns, Helston Town Bands Musical Director, talks Flora Day,

provides an insight into what the day is like as a member of the band (pre-watershed version!?) and shares some of his favourite Flora Day moments."

Kevin said:

"On behalf of Helston Town Band and myself, I would like to wish you all a very happy Flora Day wherever you are, obviously this year due to Coronavirus when the clock strikes 7 there will be no beat or sound coming from the bands bass drum. A very sad moment for all of us but also a necessity to save lives so we can all enjoy next year together with all our friends and families."

In the video, Kevin gives people an insight into what it is like to take part in the day, from the morning dance to the midday dance and finishing off with the evening dance.

Discussing the morning dance, Kevin said:

"As we proceed up Meneage Street you can see the joy and love in peoples faces plus the odd tear with people remembering families, friends and loved ones who are no longer with us, it is a very special moment that touches the hearts of all of us in the band."

Kevin paid tribute to two "great supporters" of the band Betty Liddicoat and Fred Angove.

"Two people who loved Flora Day and will be missed by all of us in the band and everyone from the town of Helston," Kevin said.

Kevin also thanked The Godolphin Club who provide the band with a breakfast and The Blue Anchor and Simon Stone who provide the band with a free pint of Spingo after the morning dance, for "their generosity throughout the day".

Kevin added:

"At the end of the evening dance when the band stops playing we have a couple of minutes to reflect on what has been a very busy and special day for the band rain or shine.

"It is a special moment that we share with one another, the band spend many hours together and are like a family and this is our moment to appreciate one another before giving ourselves a well-deserved encore and one more run through which is as vibrant and fresh as it was almost 12 hours earlier.

"The crowd's reaction and enthusiasm always shows me why Helston people look forward and enjoy Flora Day more than Christmas. A very special day for very special people."

Kevin thanked the hard work of the Flora Day Association stewards, association Chairman John Eddy and secretary Nick Wills for helping Flora Day "flourish."
