Additions to a 17th-century pub in Porthleven are expected to enhance the building and provide extra useful local facilities.

Exciting changes are ahead for The Ship Inn, based on Mount Pleasant Road, after conditional approval was granted this week (28th).

Submitted by Michael Waite Associates on behalf of the owners, the application sought listed building consent for the adjustment of the space, and changes to the fabric of the building.

The changes see a relocation of the kitchen to the Smithy next door with a chimney extract.

There will also be a demolition of the existing toilet block and new replacement toilets. Removal of canvas roof between The Ship and The Smithy - a new glass roof will be put in to link between the two buildings, alongside new glazed walls and doors to the link.

The application reads:

"Over the last twenty months, the covid pandemic has significantly adjusted the operation of The Ship. Like most other public houses the customers were moved into the gardens and outside space. Luckily The Ship had the space and responded with new expanded outdoor facilities.

"During the coming seasons, this will be the new norm with 75% of dining outside. The existing kitchen cannot cope and the toilets have seen better days."

On the proposal the application states:

"The owners propose to relocate and expand the kitchen facilities to the larger Smithy - which gives direct access to the gardens. The existing kitchen will revert to snug seating in the bar. The toilets will be rebuilt and modernised.

"The space between The Ship and The Smithy is currently open to the elements and offers very little shelter during the rough winter months. The proposal provides enclosure and shelter without visually joining the two separate buildings."

The Cornwall Council officer overseeing the application added:

"The proposal has been approved because it is considered that the development proposal accords with policies and there are no other overriding material considerations, which justify refusing planning permission. Taking these factors into account, on balance, it is considered that the proposal is acceptable, subject to conditions."

Porthleven Town Council also supported the application.
