'A unique experience': Inside Helston's newest cafe cross-pollinating with shop

If you are browsing through the Fox in the Hen House you are likely to see something different in the shop.

Occupying a space towards the back of the store on Wendron Street is Milk & Sugar, a brand new coffee bar in the town.

Run by ex-police officer Lucy Russell, the cafe offers a range of locally sourced cakes and coffee, in a cosy modern environment.

Living in Oxfordshire, Lucy fancied a career change after 13 years in the force and decided to make the move down to Helston after always having a passion for Cornwall.

Lucy was looking for a premises for the business but with no luck. She got talking to Paula Jewels, the owner of Fox in the Hen House, and allowed her to set up in the shop until the business is established.

Meeting with Nub News, Lucy said she is a great lover of afternoon tea, coffee, and cake. A perfect match.

Milk & Sugar officially opened this week, Lucy said:

"It has been really positive, everybody locally has been supportive and made lots of lovely comments. Hopefully, I'll be popular in the town.

"I didn't want to step on anyone's toes and it is actually ideal that I'm starting smaller.

"Hopefully making us stand out is the hospitality. I really love working in the hospitality field, and the cakes as well I have done a lot of trial and error to get them right. We have a brilliant supplier of delicious cakes which we have had great feedback from.

"I believe afternoon tea is something that isn't offered in the town, and creamed teas. Locally sourced scones, cream, and jam. The afternoon teas can be done via pre-order, I am hoping that will take off as well."

Lucy added:

"I think this is called cross-pollination, the great thing about this is that I'm hopefully bringing more footfall to Paula's shop. People have been in Christmas shopping and sat down for a treat as well."

Lucy describes the place as a unique shopping experience, and small but perfectly formed.

Milk & Sugar also offers free delivery within the town, anybody that is stuck at their desk and can't get out can pre-order by phone and Lucy will drop it off.

Milk & Sugar is open Monday-Saturday 8:30am until 4:30pm.
