Tregarrick Farm new dairy building will allow family business to expand and improve welfare of animals

A family farm dating back to 1902 has been given the nod for upgrades to the business.

Tregarrick Farm, based in Wendron, had applied for permission to build a new dairy building and slurry pit - with the parish council supporting the plans.

Now in its fifth generation, the farm has always been run as a dairy farm and currently looks after around 110 cows, whilst 25 are dry, along with calves and youngstock.

The current buildings at the farm are deemed "no longer suitable" and need upgrading due to the growing size of the business. The new buildings will give the cows more ventilation and light - making them more productive.

A planning statement reads:

"The farm would like to invest in a new purpose-built dairy building to house three milking robots to replace the parlour, 168 cubicles for all the milking cows. A separate open earth banked clay lined slurry pit.

"This development has been carefully considered and designed to offer the best overall layout, taking into account the day-to-day farm management, the best possible animal welfare requirements.

"The existing obsolete dairy unit and cubicles are no longer fit for purpose in modern agricultural welfare standards. The owners are very keen to provide maximum standard of animal welfare to the cows and all livestock in their care."

The existing buildings would be maintained to house calves, youngstock, dry cows, and a covered dung heap. Therefore increasing the size of the herd to approximately 150 cows.

The plans were granted conditional approval last week.
