An ex-navy engineer is running a bike hire and repair business at Helston Boating Lake.

Shaun Ginbert left the navy in February this year and had always a plan to go into the cycling industry after having a long time passion for bikes.

Shaun had his first season over the summer having opened the shop in May proving very successful.

The shop is open all year round offering everything from, advice, hire, servicing and repairs. Lakeside Cycles is also an official e-bike Bosh service centre. Shaun recently announced the launch of their new shop, stocking different components, cleaning products, lights, gloves, and more.

Reflecting on the last six months, Shaun told Nub News:

"When I first started it was just the cycle hire, but now I have had a bit more time to sort out the servicing and repairs. I have added a shop area, I have done my e bike training, it has progressed quite nicely.

"I am still trying to feel my way through winter. Just trying to get myself established, really enjoying it. I did 32 years in the navy so I am really enjoying being self employed."

He continued:

"I really want to establish myself as a reputable place for people to bring their bikes. I am hoping I will be able to do more servicing and repair, along with the sales of parts and accessories.

"Around Christmas time I am offering to build kids bikes if people don't have the confidence to do it. I can deliver it to them on Christmas eve. The next season starts with Easter weekend, I am looking to have a few e-bikes in. Into another season of hiring bikes which is very busy.

"This time I will try and look at employing someone to help me because that summer period can be really hard work."

Shaun has exciting plans, hoping to open a proper shop in the near future:

"I'll still keep this shop for hire but it would be good to move the repair and sales to an actual high street shop, somewhere I can sell bikes as well. Hopefully covid will calm down, things get back to normal and 3-5 years time look to move into a proper bike shop."

Lakeside Cycles is open Tuesday-Saturday 9am-5:30pm, based at the Boating Lake.
