Men's Sheds Association looking to open in Helston
UK Men's Shed Association is exploring the option of launching an initiative in Helston.
Men's Sheds provide support and guidance to individuals and groups across the UK in starting and managing Men's Sheds.
Originally founded in 2013 in response to a need for a central body to represent and raise awareness of a small, but growing number of Men's Sheds - also including a large female membership.
Then there were just 30 Men's Sheds in the UK. In 2015 they became a registered charity with a view to providing more formal support to the Men's Shed movement.
Fast forward to today and there are over 600 Men's Sheds open and an additional 150 or more in planning at any one time. The benefits include regular social interactions, new and improved skills, and regular, active participation in activities.
They raise awareness of the social and health benefits of Men's Sheds in reducing isolation, loneliness and in empowering local communities.
The discussions for a Helston scheme are currently in the early stages, Ambassador for UK Men's Shed Pat Cooke got in touch with Nub News to reveal more about the plans.
Pat Cooke said:
"At the moment it is preliminary discussions, I have interest from RNAS Culdrose and from a resident of Helston.
"In the first instance, they would need premises and a small committee to get it started. We as Ambassadors can offer advice and help where necessary."
Men's Sheds is looking to organise an online meeting in February to discuss further.
