An amber weather alert has been issued for Helston and surrounding areas as Storm Eunice approaches.

Storm Eunice is due to arrive this week and it could be the most powerful in years, predicts Cornwall Council.

Storm Dudley and Eunice resulted in a yellow weather warning being issued for Helston and surrounding areas with winds of up to 50mph expected.

It has since been upgraded to an amber warning - "significant disruption" is expected this Friday between 3am and 9pm.

The storm is likely to be as powerful as those that affected Cornwall in 2014, while forecasters have warned it still has the potential to strengthen further.

In 2014 Cornwall experienced a series of devastating winter storms with people evacuated from their homes, boats sunk and railway lines affected.

The worst of the winds are set to coincide with high spring tides along the Cornish coastline at around 6am, leading to overtopping and possible flooding. People are urged to stay back from cliffs and seafronts due to the danger of large waves.

Residents are urged to pay close attention to the weather forecast over the next two days and are urged to only travel on Friday if absolutely necessary.
