Last week, the team from West Cornwall Wildlife Rescue and Rehab were tasked to rescue abandoned cockerels at Kynance Cove.

On Tuesday, the wildlife rescue team appealed for information into the animal welfare crime.

Abandoning animals into the wild can have significant consequences, "these animals will be confused, fearful, not know how to protect and fend for themselves including finding shelter in winter and will be subject to attacks by both pets and Wildlife," they said.

A volunteer from Sue's Cat Rescue responded to check on the situation.

She managed to catch them but there the wildlife rescue group stated there is clear evidence that others were there and had been killed.

A spokesperson for the wildlife group said:

"Owning domestic animals is a lifetime responsibility, not a short term hobby, and those unwanted need to be-rehomed not thrown out.

"If you find yourself in this position reach out to animal rescues, community groups and local smallholders to help. Take responsibility for life.

"Millions of egg layers are attempted to be rehomed after their eighteen months use on hen farms throughout the country. Hobby breeders may end up with males instead of females for their flock.

"If anyone knows who may have been responsible for this animal welfare crime please contact the RSPCA. A crime reference no. can be obtained from here."
