Three local causes shared nearly £7,000 when the Co-op's annual fundraising campaign reached its conclusion.

Each year new local causes apply for the payout with three selected to benefit.

When Co-op Members buy selected Co-op products and services, 2p for every £1 they spend goes into their Co-op Membership account and Co-op gives the same amount to support community organisations and local causes.

The local causes all celebrated when they joined together for a short presentation ceremony outside the Mullion Co-op, Nansmellyon Road.

Members shopping at the Mullion store helped raise the funds throughout last year.

Representatives from the three causes selected attended the ceremony to collect their cash and share details about their schemes.

Mullion Football Club was awarded £1,474.02, Mullion in Bloom £1,774.83, and Cornwall Air Ambulance £3,638.56.

A winner of the Green Flag award, Mullion in Bloom is a community group that promotes horticulture for the benefit of the public generally and especially for those who live in or visit the village.

They provide and encourage the planting of flowers and shrubs in places visible to the public all year round.

Mary Kemp, Chair of Mullion in Bloom, commented:

"We were absolutely delighted to be chosen and were blown away with the support from both the Co-op and our local community. The funds raised will be used to replace our old wooden containers for our flower displays, several of which are now beyond repair.

"When the winter and spring displays have finished, we will be replacing them with very good quality double skinned plastic ones that are made from recycled materials. Although these containers are expensive in the first instance, they will be very cost effective in the long run. As a group we are very appreciative of the support that has been given to us."

Cornwall Air Ambulance Fundraising Officer Julia Jeffery added:

"Thanks to everyone who shopped at the Mullion Co-op and chose to support Cornwall Air Ambulance. Your donations have helped to save lives across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. From the team at Cornwall Air Ambulance – thank you."

"The much-needed funds will go towards keeping our helicopter flying across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, from equipment through to fuel for the helicopter, as well as general running costs for the charity."

The three new local causes selected for Co-op Community Fund support in Helston this year are the Lizard Lifeboat, Sunshine Café and 1st Mullion Guide Unit.

Co-op Members help thousands of grassroots community projects through the Local Community Fund by selecting a cause to support.

Since 2016 Co-op Members have raised more than £85m for over 25,000 projects.

Supporting these local causes aligns with the Co-op's mission of fairer access to food, mental wellbeing and opportunities for young people.

Co-op Membership helps support Co-op's national charity partners and Local Community Fund causes.
